Have you ever received exactly what you thought you wanted and then had doubts that it was really what you needed? Wants can be a double-edged sword. So maybe we should just ask for what we need – not what we think we want – and trust that we will find deeper satisfaction from our needs than our ever-changing wants. It’s like saying, “Give me the car that’s practical, affordable, and reliable.” Rather than, “I want a brand new red convertible Audi with leather seats and an awesome sound system.”
Because, at the end of the day, for long-term comfort and year round usability, a different car may suit you better. Just like a different house, spouse, job, or wardrobe may fit you better too. It’s not in the outcome itself, it’s how we think the outcome will make us feel. So instead of asking for a particular thing, perhaps it would be best to ask for a feeling state we’d like to experience. Going back to the Audi example, you could say, “I want to feel complete freedom, powerful speed, and unbridled joy each time I drive.” Then you might just be surprised at what the Universe has in mind… who knows, it could be even better than that red Audi! So, don’t be attached to outcomes; be attached to feelings.
Here’s a simple prayer I say to ensure wonderful outcomes and to put my mind at ease: “God, give me what I need to survive and to thrive. Thank you. Amen.”
