In my last post I spoke about ways to hear God’s voice. Well today, I went walking deep in the forest and it dawned on me, why talk about a “voice” when feelings are so much more accurate? I mean, my example this morning came clear as day. I was sitting in meditation and I heard a voice say, “Don’t hike today.” I sat for a second with that idea and registered it in my body, and felt no truth to it. So, I went hiking anyway and had a great time!
The moral of the story is: relying on a “voice” may be too confusing. For our egos can disguise themselves quite well, and besides that, I don’t think I’ve ever had a voice speak directly to me that I could confidently say was God! But I could say I have had gut feelings and synchronistic events that no doubt had God’s fingerprints all over them. So… maybe the lucky few of you have heard God’s voice and can recognize it easily, but for the rest of us who have trouble discerning, I encourage you to challenge the voice. Challenge the voice if you think it’s really God’s. That’s what I did on my hike, and I proved it wrong! Even though it came in a soft, gentle whisper with all the “characteristics” of God, it was not!
One more thing, try this: In your morning meditation, ask yourself how you feel about something. Don’t worry about the voices in your head, just ask your body if it’s physically strong enough and emotionally well enough to do whatever thing you’re asking about. Once you tap into your body’s wisdom, you won’t have to rely on any voices.
