That’s all you have to do. Sometimes I think we can even overthink meditation. We can count our breaths, slow our breath, or use guided visualization. And while all these methods have their place, what about just listening to the silence? What about just literally doing nothing?
Yes, it’s true that your thoughts will come and go, but you can stay behind all that – like a person in a movie theater just observing the pictures on the screen. When you think of it this way, you may be able to detach a little easier and you can still stay focused on the silence. When you can focus so much on the silence that it is as if you are keeping your “ears clear” for God’s guidance, any stray sounds that pop up could be taken as what you were meant to hear that day.
The keys to remember when focusing on the silence are eagerness and curiosity. You must be eagerly anticipating what the silence holds for you; curious like a child on a new adventure. Be excited to meet it and greet it with a sense of awe and wonder. When you think of meditation this way, it becomes more fun and makes you realize just how enjoyable sitting in silence can be!
