Change Your Story

Changing your story is all about changing your attitude. Maybe you need to change your attitude around your job, your spouse, your kids or even your illness. If you’ve been harping on all the negatives, or you can’t stand how pessimistic you sound every time you open your mouth, that’s a sure sign it’s time to change your story.

Old, habitual, deeply-ingrained belief systems can be hard to change, let alone recognize; but it is possible if you make it a priority. Like anything else in life, when you want something bad enough, you tend to rearrange your priorities. When you pay attention to your thoughts, it’s not that hard. And you don’t even have to know what it is you really want, you just have to know what it is you don’t want.

Immediately when I notice things I don’t like, I say to myself, “I am grateful for contrast.” This helps me to remember that as I experience a negative emotion, I can use it to guide me toward a better outcome. That’s the first step: gratitude for the awareness of the contrast. Then I can redirect my thoughts when they arise.

Here are some examples of phrases I repeat to change my story:

Everything always works out

I don’t have to know how

God is my source

Miracles abound

Constant blessings rain down on me
