Finding Your Center

Often we go through periods where everything flows nicely. Perhaps we have our own space, our own routine, and we feel completely comfortable with the habits we’ve set in place for ourselves. Then suddenly life changes; we get a roommate, a pet, or move to a new location. Anything that throws our natural rhythms can cause additional stress and irritation. This is why it’s important to be able to find your center – and come back to it – no matter where you are, who you’re with, or what kind of mood you’re in.

I recently felt that I did not have the space in my home to do my yoga practice without someone else being around. At first, I went into my room where there was less space but more privacy, however, after a while I started to feel resentful that I couldn’t continue my routine out in my living room. Eventually, it dawned on me that no one was prohibiting me from being out there but myself – and my self-conscious feelings. So, I decided to be brave. I went out there and did what I do, even while others were around.

It was empowering not to care – although a little uncomfortable at first – after all, I was stepping out of my introverted comfort zone. But in doing this I had the profound realization that it’s up to us – always – to find our center. We can make excuses all day long about the distractions around us, or we can just do our thing anyway. It takes courage, but it’s so liberating when you do. And it just goes to show, how finding your center is as much of a mindset as it is an emotional state of being.
